    Very informative. thank you. I use the Versa Flow and got the carbon filter because some streams have warnings about metal contamination from previous mining activities. But it's good to know it will be effective against cyanobacteria toxins.

    I've had two Tarptent Sublites (Tyvek), one Rainbow, and an original Bowfin. I still have the Sublite and Bowfin, and the Sublite has been my go-to tent ever since I got the first one. I can't remember when I got the first Sublite, but it was with the first release, before they had a screen door. Shortly after i got the tent, Henry asked me to send it back, and he installed a screen door for free. The first Sublite was destroyed by a racoon on the Lost Coast, and the second one is still going strong. The Bowfin is my "heavy weather" tent, and I carry it in my "Oh Shit!" kit when I row remote lakes.

    I used this tent on a few trips this summer. After packing up wet, dirt found its way into the zippers and they both started to fail when i tried to use them under too much tension. Tough to move the lower fastener, then seperating apart. Running the upper zip fastener back and forth helped reconnect it. When I can secure the guylines for the vestibule door and the top of the trekking pole w/ a stake, then i can keep the upper guy line taunt while providing some slack to the lower line (less tension on the zipper). When i couldnt secure the guy lines with stakes (only a few inches of sand over rock slab), i just used large rocks. That kept both lines super taunt and led to the zipper failure. Later at home, i cleaned the zippers with soap, inspected the teeth, and tightened the fastener w/pliers...they are both working nice again, however, i cant use rocks like that again.

    Excellent review. I've really been debating between this pack and the significantly heavier Osprey EXOS 48. I was willing to pay the price of another pound and a half for the perception of much greater comfort. But you've persuaded me otherwise with the extremely detailed review that you gave, and breakdown of the equipment. Thank you.

    Just stumbled upon your channel after countless reviews as I have been in the market for a new wilderness home for some months now. Your review nailed down my choice of the Unbound 2P as I was about sold on it, but as it's a fair piece of change I wanted to be sure. The features you covered locked me down, especially being able to pitch right to ground, if necessary. I have been in storms for sure where it would have definitely been more than necessary lol. Thanks for your excellent content and your over the top teaching skills! Had to subscribe due to this single video.

    6:59 Maybe not "dramatic" injection of nutrients, but what about from backcountry campers and their catholes? That lake basin is a catchment for all the hikers that travel through there. Yosemite backpackers, PCT'ers or otherwise... anyone in the last 100 years or so who wanted to climb a mountain and decided to poop on it. I appreciate your practical solutions and overall discussion on this topic.

      Very curious about the impact of human waste in the back country on cyanobacteria, but that part of the Sierra has active cattle and sheep grazing leases that have been grandfathered in for generations. With herds in the thousands going through in the warm months, it's hard to imagine human waste having a comparable impact. It should be noted that the basin he singled out is on the Hoover and Inyo side of the crest divide and would not be a catchment for PCT or Yosemite hiker waste.

    Question related to filtering and then passing through a carbon filter. If the filter media captures the bacteria does that mean that the bacteria will then die in the filter and release the toxins at a later date?

    • @keelanrose5706
      @keelanrose5706 Месяц назад

      backflushing will take care of that. it should get rid of nearly all the algea and if there are dead algae it'll get rid of the water soluble toxins. After using your filter for a trip you should soack it in clorine dioxide water for a few minutes to kill off any algea and bacteria (not just cyano bacteria, also any others). Then backflush and you'll have a nice clean filter. also use vinegar if you think there might be some mineral build up from filtering hard water.

    • @jeffreybringolf6471
      @jeffreybringolf6471 23 дня назад

      I'm not an expert by any means but I've read that boiling water containing cyanobacteria will destroy the bacteria and release even more cyanotoxin into the water. As far as I know, cyanotoxin is not heat-labile, otherwise it wouldn't be much of a problem :P

      I'm not an expert, but apparently boiling will destroy the bacteria which releases more cyanotoxins into the water. Cyanotoxins also aren't destroyed by boiling, so boiling water containing cyanotoxins or cyanobacteria will simply increase the concentration of the toxin.
